Birkirkara Local Council ‘s commitment towards lifelong education, led to the partnership with GISED Foundation and TCTC – one of Malta’s top IT organizations. The Council was able to offer the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) courses completely free of charge to their residents, identified as a priority in the area’s social needs, and thus reducing the gap between the “have” and “have nots”.
The Council, becoming the pioneers in offering this kind of course free of charge, hoped that other Local Councils would follow suit. In a complex competitive working environment, the current administration felt the need to offer this essential qualification to all those interested in beginning a career in the computer sector, or simply using this European recognized qualification as a gateway for employment opportunities.

Spring hunting is extremely damaging, killing birds just days before their nesting will begin in the UK and across Europe.
Malta is widely regarded as the worst offender against the EU Birds Directive of all the European Union’s 27 member countries. While changes in Maltese hunting legislation were a step in the right direction, the Maltese government has continued to allow spring hunting of turtle dove and quail and the spring trapping of finches – both activities in clear breach of European law – since it joined the EU in 2004.
Support in the form of sponsorships and partnership agreements with local and international companies and organisations is important for BirdLife Malta to carry out its conservation, research and education work effectively.
GISED’s donation to BirdLife Malta immediately after their Foresta 2000 site was destroyed by vandals assisted in the repair of the 3000 damaged trees, regain the lost work and the lost trees. Foresta 2000 began as BirdLife’s gift to the third millennium, an afforestation dream planned to become Malta’s biggest woodland.

In an effort to increase the computer literacy amongst the unemployed, older people and people with disabilities to participate in the Information Society, GISED provided its sponsorship to TCTC , a leading Maltese company in ICT (Information & Communication Technologies) training. This allowed such courses as the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) to be offered free-of-charge to such marginalized groups in Malta and Gozo.
As the EU Commission’s Communication ‘A Digital Agenda for Europe’ rightly identifies, improved digital literacy and ICT skills’ development will have a critical role to play in the drive to: invigorate the Maltese economy, nurture an innovative workforce, and to minimise the digital divide, and will be integral to the success of the policy of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Children often cannot attend school because of the need to help support the family. By providing schools with sponsorship which enables them to purchase books, supplies and even uniforms for their students. This allows the children to be able to receive an education as it relieves the pressure on the parents and they in turn can be taught how to earn a stable income whilst their children attend school. GISED sponsorship assists by providing micro loans, and income generating skills training.
